French Basque Country

The French Basque Country is nestled between the Pyrenees mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. In this rural area, the main economic activities are growing vegetables and raising animals. It’s not unusual to see herds of sheep and horses grazing in the fields. The sheep’s milk is used to produce one of the many fine cheeses that France is famous for.

La Rhune mountain

Rising above its beautiful surroundings to height of 905 meters, this peak is considered the first of the Pyrenees. You can ascend to the summit by an antique train from the nearby village of Sare. From the top, the view is spectacular. On one side you see the highest peaks of the Pyrenees while on the other side you see the Atlantic ocean and French and Spanish coastline. The train ride is optional and not included in the price of the tour.

Basque villages on both sides of the border

There are idyllic villages spread throughout the area. This area is the border between France and Spain, which could be defined as the heart of the Basque country. Its inhabitants have never been French or Spanish. They are Basques and they speak in basque. One could say that this part of Europe is no man’s land.

Unique historical heritage

Ainhoa

This is one of the best examples of the typical Labourdine architecture. It is made up of one main street where you will find the church, cemetery, Basque ball court, and little shops featuring local products. Most of the houses date from the 16th and 17th centuries, exactly as they were rebuilt after the 30 Years’ War.

Espelette

Another magnificent example of Labourdine architecture. This village is well known for its fine products like cheese, chili peppers and chocolate. Also, you will find local shops with artisan products. My personal favorite is chocolate with chili peppers.

Sare

Sare is located at the foot of La Rhune mountain. This tiny village features typical regional architecture like The Church of San Martin and Town Hall, both located in the main square. Here you can enjoy a coffee in one of its idyllic terraces and buy a typical creme-filled Basque cake.
