Bilbao

Since its foundation in the 18th century it has been an important commercial settlement thanks to the privileges that were granted by the Crown of Castilla which developed great exports in the form of Castillian wool and Iron from its mines. During the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th the city experimented its particular industrial revolution becoming the second biggest industrial hub just behind Barcelona. Today Bilbao is in the process of an aesthetic and economic revitalization which has been led by the construction of the Guggenheim Museum.

This tour includes a quick glimpse at the most emblematic places in Bilbao. We will venture into the Old City to enjoy an ‘aperitivo,’ a quick snack usually consisting of a tapa and a drink to refuel before returning to San Sebastian.

Coast and San Juan de Gastelugatxe chapel

The shrine is sitting on top of a rocky cliff and was built during the 10th century. Its dedicated to the decapitation of St. John. In the year 1053 it was donated by Iñigo Lopez Lord of Vizcaya to the monastery of “San Juan de La Peña” which is located near Jaca, in Huesca

Since we’re already in Bilbao, it’s worth heading to the Biscay coast to appreciate its wild beauty. You’ll have the oportunity to see the wonderful San Juan de Gatelugatxe church, located on the edge of magnificent ocean cliffs.

We will leave San Sebastian in the morning. The trip to Bilbao is around an hour. There we will visit the Guggenheim museum and after we will walk to the old part of town to enjoy some “pintxos” at the local bars and restaurants. After that we will set course for the Biscayne Coast where the “San Juan de Gaztelugatxe” chapel is located. We will have a stroll down the coast and see its cliffs and the gorgeous views.  Finally we will head back to San Sebastian.
